PRODUCTION / STRATEGY / DESIGN / TECHNOLOGY
Executing everything from everyday social content to overhauling legacy brands digital properties, Big Spaceship is one of the longest standing independent digital advertising agencies in the world. Though, while the company has continually evolved, by 2017 their portfolio site hadn’t been updated in three years and didn’t reflect the work they were doing.
With how quickly things evolve we needed a way to express the agencies capabilities that was easy to update, scalable to the different types of work, and put the work first.
We also didn’t want a site that made us look like every other agency.
Once we had our design criteria in place it wasn’t long until we selected magazines as our framework.
The traditional magazine structure gave us the perfect platform to work from. With their recognizable cover branding that puts the focus on the artwork and the different types of content we knew we could adapt it to what we needed.
With the need to feature multiple content types on the home page we developed a scalable cover framework that highlights: case studies, awards, agency news, thought leadership and PR updates.
We had learned from our initial discovery that the time it took to create new assets and case studies was one of the main reasons the previous site didn’t get updated. Knowing this we made it so the hero cards could be made quickly and without the need for a full case study or custom assets.
We did this by allowing the hero cards, at their simplest variation, to live on their own within the feed or with more content they could be expanded and lead to a more in-depth experience on the site as well as link out to external destinations.
The left-right interaction of the hero page extended into the case studies and played into the magazine concept of flipping a page.
We also developed a modular framework for the case studies that adapts to any type of project. This framework covers everything from a single image or video up to a full editorial case study. Once a case study reached an editorial level we implemented a content framework of: assignment, objective, execution that kept everything consistent and promoted the agency's unique approach within each case study.
MOBILE FIRST NAV
With the magazine style interaction built into the site we needed a way for people to ‘reset’ their experience. Taking a mobile first approach we developed the persistent menu button that opens a full page takeover navigation, or table of contents. From there people are able to return to the hero homepage or navigate to any section of the site they want to explore further.
The new bigspaceship.com has enabled the agency to consistently update and share the work they’ve been doing with 7 new case studies in 12 months as well as showcase the way they apply their multidisciplinary approach to every engagement.
